Should I get a lawyer? If so what kind and what would that run me approx?

I have a misdemeanor for petty theft and currently live in Stockton Ca. I am so angry at myself and am very frustrated because I can't get a job to save my life. I have had so many doors slammed in my face, that's it's not funny and some temp agencies that I want to apply at (due o the companies they service) said that I can't even apply if I have a misd. for petty theft and how they only want the "highest quality" employees to offer to their clients. Made me feel like sh!t. I've had jobs my entire life and granted I did make a kid mistake at the age of 23, however I had no representation, I just plead guilty and they gave me 3 years of probation and made me pay $310.00 for taking 25.00 worth of food for my family. We were doing bad at the time. I've never done anything like this in my life and now employers wont even look at my resume. Nobody seems to want to help me as far as programs for employment, public defenders are not helping me, should I get a lawyer, would it be worth it?

Sorry that you allowed the court to pass a judgment against you.You have not indicated as to the year in which it happened. If it has happened within the last three years , you can file an Appeal in the higher court and you have a good chance of winning as you did not defend yourself previously

Unless you want to needlessly spend money on a lawyer acting as a life coach, that won't be much help. Even though you were young and foolish, the adult conviction can not be vacated. If you think a letter of mitigation would help get you in the door, expect to pay a lawer at least $200.00; however, there are several less costly alternatives.

You could write the judge and request a satisfactory performance report from your probation officer. This would be preferable to undocumented contact with an already skeptical subordinate. Because it is not a formal document, you could appeal to a local law school or similar undergraduate program. Providing services like this help augment a students post graduate placement consideration. Also, a local ministry alliance could provide a more non-secular tone.

Alternatively, you can google your city name and "pro bono" for lawyers who would donate this time. Most lawyers are subject to an implied amount of service time as a condition of their bar association membership.

Now, for your resume. You did not say how this seems to come up in all your interviews. It is still a misdeameanor and should be treated as no more than a simple traffic ticket. If it does come up and you are not comfortable with a qualified no, say: " Just the normal scrapes that kids have...hookie, curfew, things like that. "

The easiest question to answer is one that is never asked. Don' t give a single impulsive act more attention tfhan it deserves. Good Luck.

Go around the problem. My suggestion is start your own business; start with a small one in the city.
