Should I get an ABA approved paralegal cert for $11,000 (with books)?

I have to make a decision tonight whether or not to sign up for a paralegal program that closes to new applicants tomorrow. I'm an out of work career changer (from the IT field), with a BA in political science, and have an interest in law. Will I be able to find a paralegal job and get a return on this money? I read it's a hard field to break into, and this money is all I have.

Jobs right now in the legal field are very scarce and law firms are cutting back on staff. Another big problem is a great majority of law firms and small offices are not willing to take the time to train new staff or have the staff train a newbie (we're certainly not doing it.) Another problem is a majority of firms and law offices want at minimum one year of experience preferably in their perspective legal field (i.e., Real Estate, criminal, litigation...). This is the main problem with new paralegal graduates. They have zero experience and not too many firms are willing to train especially now. Do not waste your money. I am not advising you not to pursue it, I am merely advising you it is not a good time to pursue this right now. |
