Should I quit my job without notice?
|
My supervisor's boss called me a SOB and said that he could not trust me to a coworker over possible insubordination, which had not occurred. I have accepted another job with a competitor, but have not turned in my notice. Should I pull a Johnny Paycheck and tell him to take this job and >>> it? I realize that this would not be a classy move, and I think this would put my supervisor in a tough situation. I just hate the idea of working out 2 weeks notice. I was threatened with termination if I were proven to have been insubordinate. He may not trust me, and I certainly don't trust him. He is BIPOLAR with long mood swings. Help?! Notice??
I do not have a contract and it is an employee at will state.
Until this point I have been very tactful and thankful allowing things to work themselves out to avoid putting my supervisor in a difficult situation.
We have more than 50% turnover and I have seen this happen time and time again. I just don't want a part of it anymore.

Tell him something nice that he wont expect. He will remember you for the rest of his life and think about how kind you were inspite of his ignorant behavior toward you. Find your bliss and forget about him and his foolishness.
I hope this helps |

Turn in your notice. If your boss doesn't like you, he may not require you to work the last two weeks. The original idea behind the two week notice was to give the company time to find a replacement or reassign your work.
If they have threatened you with termination, then they already have a plan in place to get rid of you. Do the professional thing and turn in your resignation before they fire you. Then you can answer honestly when asked if you quit or were fired from your last job.
You can also turn in a two week notice but tell them that if they want to end the relationship sooner, that would be acceptable provided it is listed as a resignation, not a firing. Generally, the productivity of someone who has turned in notice is not great and the company won't want to have an unhappy person working there. If you have access to sensitive company information, they may want to lock you out the moment you give notice. (I quit a retail job once and was not permitted to count the nightly deposits or access the safe during my last two weeks.) |

When a company lays you off, do they give you notice. Just make sure you get your pay check and cash it. Then go back and tell him this is your last day. If he owes you any pay, he has to mail it when your next pay would have come up. Even if you gave notice, he might tell you to leave that day. |

Even if you do not have a written contract with your employer, it is still good practice to notify your employer that you are quitting your job effective a specific date. |

damn you suck

Do you have any vacation or personal time left to take? If so then use the time up and before coming back give the company a call and resign.Don't blow your fuse and quit. You might need to re-cross that bridge someday or might need it as a reference. |

they may fidn reason to keep your last paycheck without giving notice and keep any vacation time you would have been owed but since you already have another job and dont need his reference ..just call em and tell em your not coming back |

No doubt it is poor form to go quickly, so you have to weigh the benefits of each.
If jobs are plentiful with many companies, there is a good chance you will not need to go back to work for the company or manager. Ask yourself if you would want to go back.
I've had lots of jobs in the last 20 years and have seen people from my past twice. Sometimes it's a small world, but most of the time it doesn't seem to be. I am in a metro area with millions of people and thousands of companies. I would think differently in a less-populated area.
There are some benefits to leaving right away that your boss might actually appreciate. For example, the last two weeks of an employee's service is usually wasted with chatter about why you're leaving. Beyond it being unproductive you may be polluting the thinking of the remaining employees.
Would your supervisor step up to defend you, if he knew what his boss said (I assume he does not)? If the answer is no, why should you care if you leave him in a tough spot or not?
Finally, if the job market conditions support it but it would bother you a lot to walk, and you would worry about it not being professional, don't. |

Before I do something, I like to consider my options and weigh their consequences in the short and long run.
Option (A): If I were in your shoes, I would read the employee's manual they gave you when you were hired to verify that you're not penalized for not having giving them a 2 weeks notice.
Once you check this out, depending on whether there any penalties stated there or not, act accordingly. I presume that you would not have him as a reference as he is not an objective source of your qualifications.
Option (B): If you decide against giving a two week notice, then consider that your actions will not only harm your boss, but it may also stain your reputation as other employees from your company will judge you no matter what an A*SE your boss might have been with you. This may hurt you in the long run if when you are changing jobs or find yourself working with an employee from this company who's only heard bad things about you. I may be taking it too far, but these are things that we must consider- as some people say, this is a small world.
It is your choice.
Good luck in your new venture. |
