Should I tell my boss I'm planning on leaving?
|
My boss & I have a pretty good relationship. At least I think we do. That could change maybe if I told him that I'm sending my resume to firms outside of New York & planning to leave in a few months.
I'd like to tell him, because I'd like to talk with him about it. Usually he's encouraging when I talk about something I want to do. But I dont know if that would be the same if I told him I'm trying to leave my current job.
Think it would change? Think I should tell him?

I did that once and I had a GREAT relationship with my boss (and have still kept it). I told him it was time for me to move up to the next level but I was feeling loyal to him and his company and I wanted him to have enough time to look for the right person to replace me so that I can train her (I was with that company for 5 years, so I knew everything about it and I knew everything about my boss and how he wanted things handled) He was sad that I was leaving but happy that I could improve. He agreed to let me work there as long as I wanted, until I found the job and I agreed to train the new person and answer her questions even after I was gone. I think I was lucky.
What I am trying to say here is you know your boss, his temper and his attitude better than anyone of us. We can all give you our personal experiences but you have to decide. If he is nice like my boss was, he would appreciate your loyalty. If he is not and he fires you, you will still enjoy the benefits of getting unemployment while you are looking! :) |

Hi! Wait to tell him till you know you have another job. He might be ok with it and greatful or he might make you hate being at work till you leave. I had it happen to me and I was told to leave before I planed it because some one else would need to be trained for the job. I ran the business for them before I got their 3 people did my job. All they did was pick up their money check that my balance was right. But when I told my boss I was going to leave in a month I didn't get to say why, She said it had to be in two weeks. So be careful this is a person that really needed me to run her business she still can't find someone that can run it and trust them and it has been a year she is doing most of the work. So be sure you have some money saved incase you have to leave before you planed. Good Luck |

NO NO NO NO, If he knows your leaving you no longer have loyalty to the company. Even though I'm sure you say you do and will, when it comes down to the last weeks or days there is way to much temptation to let things slide.
It is even company policy with in many organizations, that when someone gives there 2 week notice the are immediately terminated. |

I guess it depends on your relationship. if you do tell him you are thinking of leaving and he offers you a raise or promotion, will that change your mind? you don't have to tell him anything, no matter how good your relationship is - he is still your boss. wait until you have accepted a job offer elsewhere and then give him your two weeks notice. you don't want to tell him you are thinking of leaving, and then have him suddenly stop giving you projects, or only give you boring tasks, and then change your mind and stay or find out it will take a little bit longer to find something else. all you owe him is two weeks notice when you finally do leave. |

It's the right thing to do by telling him so that it can give him some time to prepare for your replacement. Think about it, would you perfer to just be fired or to be given some type of info if you were no longer needed at the company so that you could prepare to find another job????? How would you feel if the tables were turned?? Good luck! |

Before you tell your boss, make sure you secure a job offer first!!!!
Before you accept the new job, tell your boss what you have been offered. If your boss sees you as an important employee, if they can afford to, your boss & company may offer you a promotion.... its worth a try.
Good luck. |

He could actually be a great ally in your venture. If you have a good relationship and your not planning on leaving for months, he might also appreciate the long heads up. |
