Should I tell my prospective employer I am pregnant?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should I tell my prospective employer I am pregnant?

I am 3 months pregnant and have a job interview that I am most likely to get, as I have worked there in the past. It is only a temporary job but with a view to becoming permanent. I am unsure whether I legally have to tell them.

It is common courtesy to tell your prospective employer that you are pregnant.

You are under no obligation to tell them but it might affect your prospects of it becoming permanent if you do not say because they will find out eventually.

You would not be eligibe for Paternity pay

Eligibility

Employees must satisfy the following conditions in order to qualify for paternity leave. They must:

-have or expect to have responsibility for the child’s upbringing
-be the biological father of the child or the mother’s husband or partner
-have worked continuously for their employer for 26 weeks ending with the 15th week before the baby is due

Reading the question I feel you already know that morally if not legally you should tell them

Legally you need not inform your employer of any medical conditions unless you are applying for Family and Medical Leave time or maternity time if you are under the auspices of that benefit. However, if you feel fairly comfortable that you will receive the job and want to be up front with your employer, it wouldn't hurt to inform them, as it really is the right thing to do. You will undoubtedly be taking several months off and being direct will afford you both an opportunity to discuss how your prospective duties will be handled in your absence. An alternative is to wait until you receive the job and then inform them. That way you wouldn't feel you may have been shot down because you informed them of your status if you don't receive the position. Schools of thought abound, it's really a personal decision you have to make, and a great deal depends on your relationship with your employer. I've attached a link to the US Department of Labor that will give you a broader overview of specifics in the Family and Medical Leave Act. Good luck with your new job, and congratulations on your new baby!

If it's only temporary, I don't think you have to tell him, but he'll probably notice eventually.

You do not legally have to tell the employer, no.

No.

It is not an issue. If you bring it up, it will be an issue.
