Should I worry about Job Abandonment?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should I worry about Job Abandonment?

So I was offered the perfect job, that pays almost double my salary, closer to home and outstanding benefits. But I once abandoned a previous job that I had when I was younger and still put them on my resume. I quit and never went back. They were very rude and since it was a family business the owners sister in law was a pain. Well now my background check is being done and I am afraid that they will not go through with the offer because of job abandonment. Should I worry? During my interview I never told them that I had abandoned the job. Now the verification office called stating that this company will only respond to their employment verification through a fax? ONLY SERIOUS ANSWERS, PLEASE???

former employers may release ANY TRUTHFUL work related information about you. there is an urban legend that it is in some way illegal to be honest about an employees performance.
the fact that they are wanting a fax for verification can be a good or bad sign. many employers as a matter of policy will only release dates of employment and re-hire status while others will give your entire history there is really no way to know for sure.

you should have been totally honest to begin with but now it is to late. you will just have to wait and see what happens and hope they don't release much info; or of they do that the prospective employer allows you the opportunity to explain. learn from the mistake and use it as a means to improve in the future.

back to the question...............YES

If they do and they ask you about it just tell them you were young, irresponsible at the time and tell them the situation with the job that was abandoned and hope and pray they sill hire you. Tell them that you are mature now, and that they wouldn't have to worry about that kind of behavior out of you and that they wouldn't regret hiring you.

It could hurt you. It paints you as being irresponsible. Also if on your application you said you quit, but it was actually job abandonment and they find out thats grounds for termination.

Yep......those things follow you forever.......may have felt good at the time.......but you would be surprised how often you run across people you work with in your career.......sorry......bad move.

I am not sure what State you are in or if it even matters but I was told (I don't know this for a fact - you may want to look into for verification) that it was illegal for your previous employer to give any information about the details of your termination except if it was voluntary termination or involuntary termination and if you were eligible for rehire or not. Proving that they broke the law may be difficult.

Take the company of your resume, do not mention you ever worked there.
