Sickness/excused absence at work?

I have to to for a biopsy on friday, the hospital have said in the letter that i need 48 hours off work before they do the biopsy.

my work are saying i have to take the 2 days as SICK! surely this is not right, i have to take 2 days out of my sick days even though the hospital have said i need these off, surely it should be excused absence.

can anyone tell me who is right before i scream!!

them 2 days are not mu choice to have them off, if the letter said nothing about the 48 hours i would go in work.

Technically you are going sick, but there are other options at
the company's discretion.
1) Take authorised absence ( payed or UN-payed )

2) Take two days out of your sick entitlement.

3) Take two days holiday.

This all depends on length of service, your sick record.
Leave it up to you.

As this is a health-related issue the sick leave would seem to be appropriate to me. The only other option will be annual leave. Unpaid time off would be at the company's discretion, but I cannot see the point in doing that. The company cannot limit your number of sick days - although it could be that they limit the number of days that they will give you full pay. But, even so, beyond that limit they have to pay you statutory sick pay - so taking unpaid leave to save sick days is not logical.
If I were you I'd take sick leave - you may not need any more sick days, but you'll definitely have to use your annual leave.

It has to go on as a sick day unless it was a family owned buisness then they could let you get away with it how about this(because I have done it at my job ) ask your boss if you could make up the hour's and still keep your sick day's... My boss is cool about it when I have to take my kid's to the doctor's then I don't have to take my sick day's.....

Even with a doctors note you would need to take them as sick days unless you have time available like a floating holiday, personal day, days off accrued because of overtime, etc. If you don't want to dip into your sick days, then you can take the days off without pay. Another thought might be to change the biopsy date to a Monday so that you can use your weekend as the two days and not have to worry about work.

well technically you are sick as you need the biopsy. check your contract. you could take em as holidays and make em pay you anyway!

As it is a letter from the hospital saying that you need 48 hours off work prior, of course your employer is going to want you to count that as sick days. If you didn't want it to go as that, you could have requested the time off ahead of time without giving a reason. But honestly....why would it be such a big deal to use sick time? Are you afraid you may use it all up or don't have that much to begin with? Perhaps more places should just go to the time off plans were everything (vacation, sick, PTO) all falls under one classification and it all comes out of the same time off bank.
