Sign contract and stay, or risk no job and leave? Help?!?

I currently teach in a school district about an hour and a half from home, where my family and boyfriend live. I have an apartment out here and the lease ends in July. I have not signed my contract to stay, nor do I ahve a place to live out here for next year, because I am waiting to hear from a school district close to home about an interview. My boyfriend's mom knows people at the school board for that district, and they said I have a good chance of getting the job. The problem is, I have to turn in my contract here as soon as possible if I am going to stay - also, if I stay next year, I get tenure, because it is my 3rd year teaching. I am torn...do i just sign my contract and stay here next year and spend one more year long distance with my boyfriend (see him on weekends), or do I risk not turning in my contract for the other job that I may or may not get? Help?

That is a really tough question that only you have the true anwer to. We could tell you what to do, but you may be unhappy with either alternative.

This should be a decision you would be most eligible to make as no one would know the situation (how much you value your BF or if you need the money or can afford to go without your job for a while or not.. etc).
But from your description, I would give sign the contract. Then again, that's just me ;)

Good luck ... I hate dilemmas!

You will get answers on both sides of the issue.

Best to ask yourself what is the worst thing that can happen? If you don't sign the contract, you will have to return and look for a job. So the worst thing with that decision is unemployment - possibly for a long time. Can you survive then? Can you live with parents, etc?

If you sign the contract, then the worst thing is that you are far away from your BF & friends. Can you drive there each weekend? Can you take public transport? Can they come up to meet you occasionally?

And is tenure worth it? The alternative is unemployment - is THAT worth it?

Asking those questions may give you a better view of the pros & cons of each decision.

Get an A3 sheet of paper and turn it portrait then rule a line down the centre. Maybe you might need another ???

Write down all the issues both direct and indirect for one decision and then do the same for the other decision. keep it going for a few days to catch all the issues you might miss and also talk to close friends and see what they can brainstorm for your decision sheets(s).

When you can't find any more issues then look at what you have written down and score with a weight for each issue, for example being away from your boyfriend might be just 1 point but you might give it a 3 because it matters 3 times more than "just a job". Focus on each issue individually on how to score it, even ask close friends.

When all is done total up the scores and find what you have. Remember this is only a hard headed guide but if you commit to it at least when you look back on "second thoughts" you can say to yourself that you tried your best and no can't expect any more from such a difficult decision.

contact the intervew place and ask them if they have made a decision concerning employment...

Take a copy of the contract to an attorney that specializes in employment law (for employEEs).

Call your local (usually county) bar association. Ask them if they have an "Attorney Referral Service" and/or ask them for names of attorneys that do employment law for employees.

When you call the law offices, talk to the ATTORNEY about payment - if you can make payments.

I wouldn't sign an employment contract without it being reviewed by an attorney FIRST.

(I am not an attorney. The preceding answer was based on my knowledge, information, and beliefs.)
