Staff policies in retail? ?
|
Hi I was using the staff computer in work to look into some policies, things like career breaks and holidays sick pay etc. And came across one that seemed to answer a lot of questions that fellow staff had.
People were being trained up to supervisor level and not getting paid for their extra work.....so i printed off the relevant "added responsibilty pay" policy. thinking it would help. After all, this was on a computer that most of us use at one time or another, and surely policies should be open to all staff members especially if they are affected by relevant issues.
One of the two copies that were printed were found today. And one of my fellow collegues and friend has foned me to say that hell has broken loose. I feel like I am going to have some major trouble tomorrow in work.
Would these policies be available to view outside of work via the internet?
Was I in the wrong? Additional Details Thanks guys. it seems that the company are hiding a lot of stuff from their staff...as i have found out.......
Maybe next i should print of the "whistleblowing policy"

I think you need to look at why all hell has broken loose.
You have probably stirred up a hornets nest and a lot of employees have now realised that they are owed back pay.
Someone originally wrote this policy and forgot to update it.
Any changes made to workers terms and conditions should automatically ensure that the relevant policy is updated to reflect these changes.
If the company doesn't want its employees to see certain documents then it shouldn't put them on a staff computer terminal.
I think what your employer is hiding is an out of date policy that can be used against them in a court of law if they refuse to pay this back pay. You are not being allowed to access it for this very reason.
the other policies are probably also out of date and will need updating.
Someone will get a ticking off for this but it won't be you so don't worry.
Unless your employer states that you should have highlighted the discrepancy to him first. |

I assume that you did not hack into an unauthorised part of your company database to find the policies you mention. If not, then it does not appear that you have done anything wrong whatsoever. I would expect the information you identified is there for all staff - simply a virtual staff handbook.
The fact that you considered it important enough to bring it to the attention of fellow workers ought not to lead to any problems for you. It is the responsibility of your employer to explain why some staff do not have access to specific policies. In this instance, they may find this very tricky. Do not worry.
Good luck. |

No you were not in the wrong as long as you had access to both the computer and printer and you had "proper" access rights to the information.
If you were using someone elses access rights and this would not of been visible to you normally then you could be in trouble.
If it is a company policy then all staff are entitled to see this anyway. |

if it has a "web address" then yes.
print a copy of the work policies. if it is part of policy then you can not be in any trouble.
( :
however, also check to see if that applies to all types of work contracts. |

Yes, you probably were wrong. Designated people in the company are responsible for interpreting policies. If you are unsure of a policy it is better to ask for clarification from your boss or human resources, not your coworkers. It may also be that employees that look like they have growth or promotion potential may be given extra responsibility to see how they perform. That does not mean they are being singled out for unpaid work. |
