Steps to becoming an Officer?
|
Hi, I'm Carol.
My question is quite simple just a little hard to figure out myself. I'm a sophomore in High school so getting to college isn't something that's that far from now. I just wanted to know what I had to do after high school in order to become a police officer or better yet a detective. Money may be a problem but my grades are not.
If I have to attend a University, would it be better to attend a community college first?

The minimum eligibility requirements to become a police officer are
Must be at least 21 years old.
Must have a high school diploma or furnish evidence of successful completion of an examination indicating an equivalent achievement, e.g. a General Education Development (GED) test. |

In most states all you need to do is apply if they are hiring. I work in law enforcement and that is the way it is here in my state. Most require that you be 21 years old as well. If you want to move up the ladder of success faster, your best bet would be to go to college and earn a degree in the criminal justice field. By the time your done with college, you will be old enough to land a good career in the field. Good thing is, some colleges will let you choose what you would like to specialize in such as juvenile justice, corrections, surveillance/security or forensics. |

Law Enforcement is an exciting and rewarding career. First thing is first, you need to finish high school. Then graduate from a university, and take it from there. |

I don't know about other states.. but here in NY you don't even need to go to college. You just need to take and pass the written exam and the physical exam. You can't apply for a Detective position. You get "promoted" to it.. in other words you excel... you meet your quotas each month, you get enough arrests under your belt to get noticed. Then your Sgt. recommends you for that position when an opening becomes available. |
