Submitting A Writing Sample?

I used to submit samples from my legal writing class, but I now have work from an internship that I got positive feedback on. Since I feel my writing has improved since legal writing class, I'd like to submit a sample to legal employers from one of the memos I worked on during my internship. The memos include the facts of our case and the names of our clients, my research on the law, analysis about how the law pertains to the facts of our case, conclusion, etc. Do I just change the names of the clients, black them out, etc? Do I need to include the facts, or is just the research and analysis okay?

Thanks!

My former employers actually told me I should send out samples of work I did for them. I'm in law school, so I didn't do anything like pleadings.

In 100% agreement with MovieBuff. Change the names of the parties to Jane and/or Jack doe. Facts should be included to support the analysis.

Black out any and all info that could be considered confidential. The people reading it will understand and appreciate that. They want to see that you can be trusted with confidential, sensitive info, as well as that you can write well.

Did you work on anything other than a legal memorandum? Like some type of pleadings that were filed with the court? Because those, at least, are a matter of public record.

For the legal memorandum, that is attorney work-product and if you release it, you could get in trouble even if you change the names of the clients. You may have to change the facts slightly as well. The reason I question why you would release this at all is if the case is ongoing (hasn't resolved) then it is not going to look good to your former employer or a potential employer that you are doing this.

EDIT: As long as your current employers are okay with you sending it out, then just make sure you delete or change the names.
