Suspension
Your employer can suspend you while the issue is looked into. You should be told why you're being suspended. To make it clear that this isn't a punishment, the suspension should be on full pay. You keep your employment rights and if you don't get the right pay you can claim the money as an 'unlawful deduction from wages'.
More about deductions from wages You may be told not to talk to other employees, customers and/or suppliers. If this stops you defending yourself, it may be grounds for appeal. It is up to you whether you comply with this but you should remember that your employer may take further disciplinary action if you don't.
Investigation
Your employer will need to investigate if there's a complaint against you, and may ask you for a statement. The investigation should be unbiased, fair and reasonable - it should seek to establish the facts and not just collect evidence against you.
You should be given copies of any information that comes out of the investigation.
If you decide you wish to resign from your employment, your employer can still choose to carry on with the disciplinary investigation if they wish.
Where to get helpThe Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) offers free, confidential and impartial advice on all employment rights issues. You can call the Acas helpline on 08457 47 47 47 from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday to Friday. |

Yes, if you check your contract you'll see that your employer states that in the case of gross misconduct, you can be suspended on full pay while everything is investigated. They do not have to have given you any previous warnings. Also, it's quite normal that you are not allowed to contact other employees - again refer to your contract (I think it's so that you won't poison their little minds!).
However, it's not usual that they should do this without you fully understanding what the allegations are. Did they explain and you didn't understand - in that case, you should have asked for clarification and shouldn't have left until you were satisfied with the answer given. There's no reason why you can't call HR or your manager now and ask - when they say that you can't contact employees, it means more your peers rather than the management.
If they didn't even try to explain, then I expect you've got a letter coming tomorrow which will outline everything. Make sure you're up nice and early to catch the post!
Now, since you're suspended, make sure you use the time constructively. Once you know the reasons that you're suspensed, you should immediately contact ACAS and the CAB for advice. They will let you know where you stand legally and will provide help if necessary. The next thing you can do is to start looking for a new job. When asked by a new employer why you're looking for a new job, you will need to be somewhat honest, but you don't need to tell the full story. |

Do you belong to a Trade Union or other Association? If so they should be able to help you. If not, try the Citizens' Advice Bureau who may be able to assist. |

I'm sure you must have a clue about why you're suspended. I would be honest about it and have an open conversation with HR and/or your line manager. |

Your rights in this situation depend on how you are employed. for example, if you are a union member, you and your union rep should be involved in the investigatory process. If you have an employment contract in place, the employer must follow the terms of the contract for disciplinary situations.
Because the employer continues to pay you your full rate, it is legal for them to suspend you pending an investigation. You are entitled to know the nature of the allegations against you.
Depending on the severity of the issue and the company's disciplinary policy, the employer may not issue a warning. For example, if you committed an act of "gross misconduct" (theft, threatening the boss with a gun, etc.), that would be grounds for immediate dismissal without any warning. |
