The bar exam... Why do they call it "bar"?

Watching a Tom Cruise movie where Cruise keeps saying "The Bar Exam." Wondering why they call it "bar."

Originally, in England, a barrier separated spectators from members of the court. Anyone appearing was called to the bar for recognition to pass and address the court, thus the term barrister. While a soliciter is authorized to prepare case work, they cannot plead cases.

A desire to break from British class rigidity and a shortage of qualified representation prevented the development of this specialization in the United States. Still we do have paralegals and, just like soliciters, they must pass the bar exam to reach barrister status. The Firm is a great movie, too.
