Because this country has been anti-labor since a national strike didn't occur by all unions across the country when Ronald Regan fired the air traffic controls who were SUPPOSED to be under the protection of arbitration. They were all in a union.
If others have never experienced what you are talking about, rest assured I understand. I have been in the process of a class action to restore my position on a job where I was fired for bogus reasons. The union cited up to 5 contract violations by my supervisor for each of four separate grievances I filed for relief from harassment. Those grievances weren't heard because I got sick and had to take a leave of absence. While on FMLA I was fired for the issues being grieved. To add insult to injury, I am now 2 months into fighting to get unemployment. My savings are depleted. I look for work every day, but this economy...
One thing I've learned from this experience is that everyone thinks workers have protection through unions. They really don't. |

why should an employer have to keep an employee whom they feel is unproductive or who does not follow policies and procedures?
the employer owns the business and should be allowed to run it as they see fit as long as they don't break any laws. businesses that have high unnecessary employee turnover don't tend to stay in business long at all.
it is expensive to advertise, recruit, hire and train employees. payroll dollars are lost for weeks sometimes months due to low or poor production by new employees.
for those reasons NO employer wants to just fire people for no reason, employee turnover is extremely expensive.
i have never met a person who was fired and did not know it could happen or that their performance was below standards. employees know when they are not doing their part even when they are not told. anyone who says they got fired for no reason is probably lying to them-self and everyone else. they may disagree with the reason and there are times when employees are terminated wrongly but the majority of terminations could be prevented if the employee was honest with them-self.
there are laws to protect employees from illegal terminations and there is the unemployment insurance system in place to help those employees who have lost a job through no fault of their own. there are also laws such as "WARN" that protects large groups of employees from mass lay-offs.
what more do you expect? |

Well, it is NOT against the law, so the fact that you think it should be doesn't change anything. Sorry. |

Employment is at will unless both parties sign a contract. Or one is in a union.
People consent to an application process in order to be hired. There are some limits like no lie detector tests and certain other tests.
It is just the way it is.
I am not aware of any lobbying groups trying to change that.
