The restaurant I work for is closing temporarily without giving any notice to its employees, is this lawful?

I have been working at this restaurant for almost two years and the closure is due to the owner going on vacation for a period of one month. I was given no notice whatsoever.

You should be able to get unemployment for the month they're closed and then you should also be entitled to your job when they re-open.

As far as I know, there's no law to prevent this. It's simply a "nasty" thing to do to people! 10 to 1, the reason why the owner didn't say anything is because he or she knew the employees would kick up a huge fuss!

Owners of a business are allowed to take time off whenever they choose. And if they decide to shutdown operations during that time, it's their right to do so.

Now most would not shut down for that long a time frame, and have their employees continue to run the day to day operations.

Your owner chose to close down entirely for vacation. So I'm sorry, but I don't think there's much you can do about this.

they can do it if they want but good company boss would give you a notice provided it wasn't a spur of the moment vacation plan.

sounds like he/she lacks the confidence and trust of it's employees.
If I were all of you,I'd look for other employment while the boss is out and when he/she returns....surprise ! !

I know a 24 hour diner where they literally closed with customers still in the booth. They hadn't been paying the rent and were evicted. The sherriff's office came in through everyone, the customers and employees, out and padlocked the door.

You'll be able to collect unemployment. In the meantime, look for a job at a more reputable restaurant.

in your contract, if you signed for something like that- then i dont think it's a problem. It was probably a last second thing- but yeah, that's disgusting of your boss to just do that.
