my wife walked out on me in 2000 (not my fault) she took out a restaing order against me We still talk on good terms about the childreen (aged 40 & 37) We have both married again I applied for a job but lost it because of the restraing order can anybody tell me how long this order remains in place or how can I get it removed I live in Scotland

Your story is a wee bit confusing.
Why was a restraining order placed against you?
You're an older citizen, divorced, remarried.
Your ex-wife had a restraining order against you for the last eight years, however you've been talking.
If you are on good terms with your ex you might suggest she go to the location she filed the order and have it lifted.
If violence was involved she may not be able to, depending on the laws in the area.
I would think you are not able to request it, being the subject.

There is really not much that you can do with a restraining order. You would have to go through your local court system, or police department, and state the reason why you would want it removed. Sometimes if you go in front of a judge or justice of the peace, they may be able to drop it, but you will need to go through the proper legal channels. They will need to hear your wife's side of the story as well.
