Tips for being a good speaker?
|
I tend to pause a lot when I'm speaking to people, especially when I'm talking about an experience that I had. I just can't find the right words and sometimes I just lose my train of thought. Do you guys have any tips for being a great speaker? I want everything to flow smoothly when I speak. Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.

Breathe slowly and deeply before you speak - sounds obvious but you'd be amazed at how many people hyperventilate when they speak because they get so nervous they forget to breathe!
Think in advance about how you want to convey your thoughts - practice on friends, family, or your dog if you have to. :) RELAX and view the conversation as a dialogue, not as a speech. Really focus on listening and responding to what the other person is saying, rather than thinking, "what am I going to say next?" |

For me it's all about jot notes and practice. It helps define an order in which i'd like to cover the topics. If you don't practice a lot, i suggest you try it out. Helped me. Good Luck. |

Speaking in public is a tough one, even for those who do it everyday!
I think one of the most important factors is that you should keep an eye contact with the audience. If you have notes, try not to read them but just glance at them from time to time. Usually it helps if you just look at the foreheads of the people as then you don't stop and notice their facial expressions.
Also don't speak too fast, after you have made an important point, you could do a slight pause for people to take the info in.
You can check out a couple of the links below, quite good tips on giving speeches! :) Hope you do well!

Practice, practice, practice.
Video yourself speaking and play it back so you can see and hear for yourself where you need to improve. Your performance may not be as bad as you think.
Another great technique I've read of is to use images in a sequence to represent key ideas that you want to share. It's easier to think of images than to keep referring to a bunch of notes, especially if you're nervous and lose your place!
Finally, remember that you have something of value to share and someone else may learn something from you that could change their lives. |
