In 2006, I tried to quit a job I had in the healthcare field, and instead, I was offered a severance package. I am not allowed to testify about my employer, and other clauses were included in the agreement.
Do you think there was something fishy about this-or does this sort of thing happen all the time?

Fishy? Sounds like it.
It seems they are hiding something that can reveal a dishonest practice, especially one that may be harmful to our health.
I would consult a lawyer, one who won't charge unless he wins in court.
With so much downsizing and eliminating of jobs, I can see where some companies would want to have their dirty laundry hidden from public view.
And, no, 2006 is not that long ago! |

It stinks!!! Severance package is sometimes a way to keep your mouth shut especially in the health care industries. If you feel you didn't do anything wrong during your tenure at the company, then you have nothing to worry about accepting it. But if you feel you've helped cover up a lot of immoral/illegal decisions which resulted in hurting your clients, then look into your heart if you can accept this payoff or not.
Money is important but don't sell your soul for it. |

They are buying silence and peace of mind that you will not work for a competitor. I assume there is a "non-compete" agreement in there too. It happens in many critical positions and industries. So as long as in your next step, as long as you are not violating the agreement take the money and go. |

You were going to quit anyway so consider it good fortune.
Also go to www.ripoffreport.com and check and see if your former company is there.
