It is the latest way for companies to get people to work for free in the hope that they will get a permament position.
If given that option I would tell them to stuff their job.

A Work Trial is part of the selection for employment. It gives an employer a chance to have a look at a prospective cnadidate, and decide if that person is someone they would like to employ, by seeing them actually do the job for a short period of time (up to a maximum of 3 weeks). It also gives the prospective cnadidate a chance to have a look at the job, and decide if it is right for them, before deciding on whether to take up the job or not.

All travel expenses will be reimbursed by the Jobcentre, and they will also pay you a £3 a day meal allowance whilst on the Work Trial.

A Work Trial can only be used when there is a genuine vacancy, leading to employment of at least 16 hours a week.

It means that the employer will only consider those who have successfully completed a work trial. You may not even get an interview before the trial. It may say 'LEP' on the vacancy, they often are work trials. Although some say you can do two weeks the time has been extended to six weeks in some cases.
Tescos near me were doing work trials for three weeks over christmas and new year, they weren't interviewing anyone until last month!

it means you work for a certain amount of time eg 2 weeks without pay and the company then decide whether to take you on or not
