Was this fair to me about this employer?

I applied for a position at a company and the company called me for an interview based on my resume. Then when I arrived the company switched the position to a much lower position with a much lower salary. I am over qualified for the position that I applied to and am wondering is it ethical to do something like this? I am a black male and I have the correct education to handle the position. I am not looking for a sympathy, but am wondering if that had something to do with this? Opinions?

There are 3 possible explanations for what happened.

The first possibility is that the position was already filled and they opted to offer you the lower position rather than offer nothing at all.

The second possibility is that the employer is doing what is know as "bait-and-switch" advertising which is an unethical business practice. In a situation like this it is probably not in your long term interest to work for such a highly unethical employer.

The third possibility is that this was a case of racial discrimination. I don't think this is probable simply because if race was the issue they could have just as easily told you the position had already been filled, or interviewed you for the advertised job and simply not extended an offer to employ you.

Did you ask them why they felt you didn't qualify for the other job? Maybe they had already filled it?
