What's the law on...?

past managers being able to tell prospective employers negative things about your work performance. one of my previous supervisors told me that they cannot legally tell people negative things about you because they can be sued for preventing you from finding a job. however, from my last job, my manager is preventing me from finding any other work. i know its because she is telling them lies. i quit from the department because i was being harassed by my manager. this is an indian company too, so if i could sue them i'd have to go against the tribe, but i don't care. but is what i was told true?
any actual laws and guidance would help thanks.

the laws concerning this protect employers.
a current or former employer can not be held liable unless they knowingly give false information. as long as the information they provide is accurate and documented they can release the info.
in some states, not all, you must give your permission.
listing a former employer on the application as a reference and signing the application is a release in almost every state.

many companies have a policy to not release info because they don't always have good control of employee files and documentation may be missing or incomplete.

A former employer is allowed to disclose truthful information about your work, if you sign a release authorization form with a company that allows them to do so. This is not illegal. What is illegal is if they say untruthful things about your work, attendance or other issues about your employment with them. This would be slander.

it is an urban myth, former employers can say anything they want as long as it is truthful, johnny was late 3 times a week, truth can be pr oven, johnny never finished his work on time , truth can be pr oven,

A past employer can legally state any factual information about your job performance: poor attendance, not working well with others, not following supervisor's directions. They can even provide their opinions on your performance.

It's not true that past employers cannot share negative information about past employees. It's basically an urban legend!
