I am a junior in high school, and really want to be a social worker, but my parents are worried because of how sad the job can get, and the salary isnt very high. So we are trying to compromise, and I really wish to pursue a career in criminal justice. i was wondering what are some other options besides the police force.

Many jobs in the criminal justice field are low pay and high drama, but they are WORTH doing if you do them well. Other jobs in the field are paralegal, bailiff, Probation Officer, Parole Officer, technician, and civilian employee. More and more governments are going with civilians to work 'sworn' police jobs to free up cops for regular assignments.
Interestingly enough, a lot of these jobs involve social work skills. You have to be able to get people to 'open up' about tragic events in order to help them. Then, there are corrections jobs inside of the system and in jail/prisons. Counselor, social worker, re-entry specialist.
Check with your local state unemployment bureau in order to find out about the types of jobs available. Also, you might want to do some 'job shadowing' in order to be able to see IF you would like to do these jobs.
Social work is an honorable profession. I have met some wonderful social workers who have their MSWs or a Bachelor's degree. Social workers do suffer from high stress and high burnout...but that is because some of them don't take care of themselves very well. Also, some of them don't practice what they 'preach' to others.
Bottom line, YOU have to make the case for entering whatever career path that you want to pursue. You can respect your parent's wishes...but you are the one who will ultimately prove your worth as an adult by respecting your parents and loving them and honoring them...but going into a career of your choosing.
The bottom line? Your parents want you safe and happy. You CAN do that in your OWN shoes and in a profession of your choice. What they NEED to see from you; to show that your are growing up is the legwork and the research to prove that you aren't wasting your time. Convince you...and you will convince them! |

Criminal investigator-Crime scene investigator, kind of like on CSI or those other police shows. Of course though you would need a strong stomach as you might run into cases where you have to inspect a murder scene. |
