To prosecute in the superior courts (anything above the Magistrates) in England & Wales you need to be either a barrister or a solicitor advocate.
To be a barrister you need to join one of the 4 Inns of Court, have either a qualifying law degree (LLB) at 2:1 standard or higher or have a non-qualifying law degree or other degree at 2:1 standard or higher plus a high mark in the Graduate Diploma in Law programme. After joining an Inn of Court you need to complete the Bar Vocational Course and undertake pupillage for a year.
To be a solicitor advocate you need either a qualifying law degree at 2:2 standard or higher or a non-qualifying law degree or other degree at 2:2 standard plus a completion in the Graduate Diploma in Law. After that you need to complete the Legal Practicing Course and complete a training contract with a firm of solicitors. After that you need to specialise in criminal law and undertake a course which will allow you access to the superior courts.
Fledgling barristers tend to earn around £40000 and solicitors around £30000. Highly experienced QCs and top solicitors can earn over £500k and have been reported to earn upto £2 million.
Hours are long, particularly for barristers due to the prep work involved. Time in court is between 9.30 and 4. Rest of the time will be based in chambers/office writing advice, reports or doing more prep work. |
