What are the laws on 14 year olds working?

You can work at 14, but you are limited in the type of jobs you can get (only "light work" is permitted) and you are restricted in the hours that you can work. Plus, most large companies would not consider taking on anyone that young. However a smaller, family-run company might do. (Although probably not to work as a waitress, because most waitresses need to serve alcohol and you wouldn't be able to.)

When you're 15, the restrictions on working hours and types of work lift, but again, most large companies don't want to know you even at that age.

You normally have to be 16 to stand any chance of getting a decent job.

You can work but you will need tohave your school sign a working permit, very few comanies will take on 14 year olds these days those> most jobs will now go to people who have been made redundant over a 14 year old. You are only allowed to work certain times of the day which is usually only after school before 7pm.

I'm supposing that this is in the UK?

2 hours a day those can be split into one hour before school, and an hour after.

5 hours on Saturday that will be upgraded into 7 when reaching 15 years old.

2 hours on Synday

5 hours on none-school weeks such as summer holiday

Cannot work above the ground (E.g on a long ladder)

Cannot work with knives and such (E.G in kitchens as a cook)

Cannot work with chemical substances that may be hazardous

You will need to get a work permit from the local government. It is simply to say that the job does not interfier with your education and will not infragmentize any of the rules I have mentioned above. The school head will need to sign it, so will your parents.

There's typically no minimum wage for a 14 year old however some govermental websites states Â£3.53 an hour. and upgraded into Â£4.77 when you're eighteen years old, upgraded again to Â£5.73 when you're twenty-two.

You cannot work before 7AM or after 7PM

ADD: You can obtain a work permit by going along with a parent to the council house of your city. Or in some cities to go to a "help-point" like the ones we have here in south Glocstureshire

you can still legally work in smaller business but it can't go through the books and has to go under other expenses i.e. you can't get taxed. So jobs like paper rounds dish washing in hotels waitressing cleaning etc for smaller businesses is ok.

Only thing is the pay is crap you work long hours and get completly p*ssed about!
