What are the maximum legal working hours for a 16 year old still in full time education?

I am 16, just finished my GCSE's and will be starting A levels in September. Just wondering about part-time, saturday/summer jobs.

Workers aged 16 and 17 should:

* take at least 30 minutes' break if they work more than four-and-a-half hours
* work no more than eight hours a day and 40 hours a week
* have 12 hours' rest between working days and two days off every week

That said, Amy, it will be hard to work during college - well done for preparing early for a job, but don't over work yourself...

This leaflet from the Greater Manchester Low Pay Unit gives information on the employment of schoolchildren. Although you have completed your GCSEs you will be considered to be officially 'at school' until the last Friday in June (regardless of your birthday).

After you have officially left school then the law (Working Time Regulations) set the limit for young workers ('ordinarily') at 40 hours a week. This would be regardless of whether you carry on in education or not - after you have left school at 16 it's your choice!

while it varies a bit from state to state you cannot work for more than 5 hours a day and 8 hours on weekends and must be off work by 9 pm mon-fri while in school. There are very few restrictions for summer months however there are some restrictions on the type of job you can have for safety reasons. About the only real jobs you can have short of some internship are food service or other customer service jobs ie cashier etc.

16 hours if you are at collage but if you tell the company you are at collage and they should be able to work the hours around you and good luck looking for a job and hope you did well in your gcse's
