What are the pros and cons of handing in a resignation letter vs verbally quitting a job?

Handing in a resignation letter is always to me, the preferred way. It allows you to actually think before you write something. That way you can thank them for hiring you, ect ect. Again, never burn your bridges....you may have to go back there one day. Best of luck to you.

you should always do both
one copy for HR or similar position and one copy for your immediate supervisor.

you should always hand deliver the copy to your supervisor and discuss it with them at that time.

Unless you intend on crossing paths with your employer in the future, it really wouldn't matter. Verbally doing so would be the respectful way to do it, but a well-written letter would also be very effective and polite.

documentation, that's all. it also shows a courtesy and professionalism if you write it down.

If it's a verbal, they can put words into your mouth, like "when Susie quit, she was snottie and she said that the boss was ugly," When, in actuality, you were nice and you didn't say that. A written is a formal document that will back you up.

Also, in a written, try to not give too many details as to why you are leaving, it can come back and bite you in the behind. Just say, I, Susie Q, give two week notice of my resignation effective July 15, 2008, thank you. or something like that. unless you totally want to go off on someone, but don't.

a letter of resignation is better because you can put down your reasons in writing and their is no ambiguity as to the terms of your resignation. you can put thought into it and there is less emotion.

Pro's: It is a formal contract that leaves the appropriate paper trail. Would you like to buy something from the store and have them say, Ok see ya? No. Even though you're leaving, by Bureau of Worker's rights you SHOULD resign appropriately so they don't terminate you Inappropriately. Plus, dates of leaving a job for future reference are always important.

Con: You look unprofessional

Best way is to be as polite as you can and go and see your boss and hand them the resignation letter and then work your notice. If you want to be away from that job they may allow you to work less notice time, it depends on the company and your boss. You may want a reference from them to get your next job so it is better to leave on a good note if you can!!good luck
