Everyone is right on here, but not knowing the nature of your question, I'd encourage you to go online to www.dol.gov and do the research for yourself.
FEDERAL law mandates pay for time worked and overtime based on a 40 hour work week. They do not mandate breaks, double pay, holiday pay, vacation pay, etc... You can work 8 straight hours with no break and no OT and it's acceptable by federal standards.
STATE laws can be very different and California is usually the toughest. State law in California does address overtime by 8 hour days instead of the broader, federal definition of a 40 hour week. |

If you are a non-exempt employee, you would be entitled to some sort of over-time pay if your hours exceed 40 in a given week.
If you are an exempt employee (say you're an office manager making $40k per year) then you can be asked to work 12 hours a day 6 days a week and not be entitled by law to anything extra. You'd have to negotiate that on your own. |

I do believe that in California you get paid overtime for daily work over 8 hours. |

depends on your pay schedule, usually overtime kicks in after 40 hours in a week. There are exceptions, if you are salaried they don't have to pay overtime. If you work on a cycle such as a 28 day cycle like many police, and fire departments they don't pay overtime until you exceed 172 hours in the 28 day period. overtime is paid at a rate of 1 1/2 of your hourly rate. |
