It appears from your avatar that you may be a Correctional Officer and if so, please believe that my candidness is not intended to be insulting.
Co-workers: The Stanford prison experiment showed that a significant percentage of society has latent sadistic tendencies that are exacerbated by such positions of power over others. It is fair to say that the levels of sadism in one’s co-workers would be higher than in most professions. I believe in consequences for your actions and I would have difficulty watching – or even knowing, that co-workers were crossing the line unscathed.
The risk/reward factor: There are physical and psychological dangers inherent in the position that are not adequately compensated for.
Injustices/Innocence: By any definition of the word ‘belong’, there are people behind bars who absolutely belong there. There are also those who do not. I would have difficulty not taking injustices home with me and allow it to interfere with my off duty quality of life.

I'm a Corrections Officer From New Mexico I think verbal and physical abuse has allot to with it. I got spit on just last night by an inmate now if I would have kicked his teeth down his throat I would have been in here myself, but I did the professional thing and walked away. We ended up having 2 uses of force with him the same night. number 2 I think is pay we do not get anywhere near what we should for the job we do. 3 I would say is administrations they all seem to forget how it is dealing with inmates on the floors everyday putting our lives on the lives on the lines every time we step through the front doors.
I want to add Thank You to all the Corrections Officers and Detention Officers for the jobs that we all do. |

I actually was thinking about going to work at a local correctional facility a 152 bed. However I'm 5'4, 130 and 21. I am a waitress right now and getting my degree in CJ and Psych. I like the aspect of always knowing what's going on in the area and like helping people. After reading these responses and knowing a woman who works there(who is older and larger). I do not let my size hinder me, I'm a black belt in taekwondo and would love to take Israeli fighting, however reading these things put everything in perspective for me. I really want to help people but not those. I would rather help victims or try to figure out why they did what they did. I am a research hound, and love to stay busy. I'm sorry this is "me" focused, I'm just happy some people put this in perspective and I would like to say THANK YOU for all those who serve our country, community and families for helping detain those who do wrongly and find those who do. |
