What area of law generally has best hours (most family-friendly)?

I would like to ask primarily people who practice law which area of law has the most favorable hours. I'm planning on going to law school, but coming out and working 80 hours a week doesn't sound like a pleasant life to me. I've heard corporate lawyers have pretty standard hours, whereas defense attorneys have really horrible hours around case time. Also, I understand that estate planning attorney have pretty favorable hours also, is this true? I would also imagine lawyers who work for government agencies have great hours but I'd still like to make decent money, so that's out of the question. Any help would be much appreciated. And in response to the first answer, my reasoning is not backwards. I think everyone can agree that no matter how interesting something is to a person, if I never see my family ever because I'm always at work, it still won't be a great area of law to practice.

I am a practicing Advocate. If you want to a successful lawyer , you will have to spend at least 18 to 20 hours a day for the job !! |

Your reasoning is backwards. Why don't you start by figuring out what areas of law INTEREST you and go from there? |

All areas of law have ups and downs as far as the work schedule goes....if you're a litigation attorney, you may have longer hours when the case is going to trial, versus other times during the litigation.
I think if you are in-house counsel for a company, you have fairly standard hours.
Also, if you're solely a "law and motion" attorney (that is one that solely writes motions for other attorneys and don't make court appearances, that can be done in an 8-5 job).
Transactional attorneys - same thing (normally 8-5).
But, if you're going to be an attorney who tries cases - either civilly or criminally, then those are the longer hours - because you don't stop preparing for trial once the day is over...
But, you have to remember, that many firms measure raises and bonuses by the number of billable hours that the associate produces... |

In general if you are employed by a corporation you will have the luxury of a 9-5 job with other corp perks and problems (downsizing, retirement age). Many government jobs for attorneys also have set hours, however, some gov. agencies like DOJ do require more hours.
For criminal law you can be on call 24/7. Personal injury / med malpractice also has notoriously long hours. Family law can also have long hours and miserable stress. Those things that a lawyer would do for a corporation --- human resources work, insurance, corporate compliance officer, corporate accounting --- all keep to the 40 hour week. But as this economy goes more is being asked of the employees. Jobs that formerly were a solid 40 hours and now being extended without additional pay. Corporations are great of overworking salaried employees.
You should stay away from public defender office, county prosecutor, or any law firm that does not advertise themselves as family friendly (there are some). I own an employment law firm, it is Christmas and I am working. I worked yesterday and will be up late tonight -- suggest you do not hang out your own shingle unless you are ready for the serious time commitment. |
