What can you do about a work colleague that gets preferential treatment?

am an assistant to the branch manager at my work, i do sales and i do alot of admin/accounts - basically anything i get told to do!

the boss hired two external sales reps, one female and one male. the female is doing brilliantly and bringing in alot of business - the male is doing terrible regarding sales, he is sloppy and lazy and expects everyone to jump when he rushes in the office. He also has a complete disregard for the systems that are put in place i.e. he promises delivery before our stock even arrives and i have to run around like a blue **** fly and explain to his clients why they cannot get delivery when he promised them for example. I have to take responsibility for his work and his orders and do most of the work and when it comes to invoicing it - it all gets invoiced on his sales code and he gets all the commission! I do not mind helping him as the owner has asked that we all help eachother with orders. but he doesnt follow procedure - the ones we ALL have to follow. i have to tell my own clients to wait for their orders and they have to pay c.o.d if they have not got an account with us. now he does what he likes because he is best buddies with the owner. the owner makes all types of exceptions for him and when something cannot be done with his order (last minute things) the boss bends the rules for him i.e. he will expect a delivery within impossible time notice and if i tell him its too late (the driver has already gone for the day for deliveries) then he will call the owner and the owner will call me and crap me out about it and tell me to make a plan (even though its not following procedure!!)

so now i have taken on all his work because he screws it all up - im the person helping and spoonfeeding him and he is the one who rakes in the commission. the boss has him travelling all over the place while i am stuck with his orders on top of mine which he cannot deal with properly so i have to work with unorganised pieces of paper and stickynotes that he leaves behind and I always have to make a plan for him and keep HIS promises to his clients!

is it legal to give staff preferental treatment? why can he get away with not following procedure? whats the point of a system if it has no teeth for the bosses favourites? is this just one of those things i have to live with or can i actually do something about it?

Find out if they are lovers & then take a week off,maybe boss will see him for what he really is!!!

This kind of poop happens and unfortunately the next thing you can expect is you will become the scape-goat for this guy and probably lose your job. Start shopping now for a better situation.

You might as well find a new job because your boss/the owner is going to keep right on giving preferential treatment to his good buddy. Sorry, but that's how it goes. The only other thing I can think of is for you to take a 2 or 3 week vacation immediately and then maybe your boss will see for himself the incompetence of his good buddy and make some changes.
