Just a few, off the top of my head:
Legal secretary (doesn't require a particular certification)
Paralegal (most states require a paralegal certificate or a J.D.)
Legal librarian (usually requires both a J.D. and a degree in library science)
Alternative dispute resolution, either as a mediator (does not necessarily require a law degree) or arbitrator (usually is an admitted attorney).
Transactional law (contracts, wills, trusts, estates, sale/leasing/management of real estate, etc.--mostly documents, pretty boring, but doesn't require too many court appearances!)
Social worker or case worker for the local family courts. (Usually requires a MSW)
Editing, programming, or fact checking for one of the major law publishing services (Lexis, West, etc.)-- usually they DO want a J.D. for editors/fact checkers, etc., but don't necessarily require bar admission.
"Attorney on call" through Lexis or Westlaw-- this is a specialist attorney who provides consultation to other attorneys in different fields.
Courtroom bailiff or turnstave (this is an adminstrative support position for a judge. Does not necessarily require a degree-- in some places it's a civil service job, but this depends on where you are).
Court reporter (requires special training and certification).
Certified transcriptionist (requires special training and certification in many states) |

Paralegal: They do all the work of a lawyer but don't get the big bucks. |

Paralegal. That's a research-type job. That way, you get to dp all of the hard work that lawyers are paid for, without the courtroom drama or the exorbitant salary of a lawyer.
btw - 'para' only means half, as in paralympics or parapeligic. So it seems that many of the Mexican Americans we may see are actually paralegal. You get what I'm sayin? |
