What do I need to bring to a job fair?
|
I am a Security Officer going to a Department of Corrections job fair this Thursday. I am halfway through my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice Admin, and I have never been to a job fair.
What should I bring with me to stand out of the crowd, and what is normal/usual to bring to a single-employer job fair?

1. 5-10 copies (better to have too many) of your resume on white or off-white bond/heavier paper. Make sure it is perfect. Have someone read over it to make sure it is error-free. You can email me if you would like; I proof and edit my friends' resumes. You can leave off the personal info. if you want. I strongly suggest you have a cover letter. Since this is a single-employer fair, you can actually make a cover letter geared to them. You want something that starts like this:
July 20, 2008
ABC Dept. of Corrections
123 Main Street
Anywhere, NY 00000
Dear Hiring Committee:
This should be brief, but detailed. Tell them why you want this job and why you are suited for it. Don't repeat your resume-you want to give specifics about your traits and skills.

I would get those paper folders that have the pockets in them (not the slanted-the horizontal pockets). Choose black or blue or grey. Put the cover letter in the left and the resume in the right pocket.
List of professional references neatly typed. Place it behind your resume. Also include copies of any certifications/trainings you may have had. Put them behind the references.
Have a few black or blue pens with you.
Bring a small plain notepad.
I would also bring your social security card and drivers license. Sometimes they do pre-hiring, you never know.
If you can get a black or dark grey briefcase or tote, that would be nice. No cologne (or make it very light). If you wear earrings, take them out. If you have a mustache or goatee, make sure it is neatly trimmed. If you have tattoos, make sure they are covered if possible (I have one, this is not discrimination :) )
Wear a suit, grey or black. If you do not have one, wear a shirt and tie. Black shiny shoes.
Greet everyone with a firm handshake and eye contact. Try to remember the names of anyone who interviews you, if that happens. It may or may not. Ask questions. Take notes. Be enthusiastic.
Find out the hiring process. My husband is a CO and it was a LONG process. I was worn out watching him go through it. :) Find out about the training you will have to take. They will probably tell you, but if you can, ask.
Job fairs can be stressful. I have been to several and it is very disheartening to see so many people competing with you. Your best chance is to dress nicely, be professional and positive. There will be people there who do/are none of these things. I was at a fair once where people arrived in shorts and tank tops. Don't act better, just act confident and be calm. They don't want snobs or people who know too much-think they do. :) Teamwork is vital in a CO's job.
GOOD LUCK! You will do fine. My husband loves his job. |

Make sure to bring resumes on resume quality paper (you can find professional quality paper at Wal*Mart), a bag with a few folders to keep information that employer hands to you, and most importantly a pack of notecards and a pen.
You will find the best jobs if you seem interested in the employer. So make sure to ask questions like "So what is your name?", "What is the best way to contact you?", "Does your company have a website?" and of course "How can we set up a longer interview?". Having the interviewers see you writing down the information on your card will mean a lot. And it will mean even more when two or three days later you call back and ask about the job. |

Take twice as many copies as you expect to need of a first class resume, dress appropriately, be in a good mood although with a professional demeanor, and meet EVERYONE.
Tips on resumes:
1. Be sure it is formatted well (page doesn't look too cramped or empty, margins line up, and spelling, spelling, spelling.
2. First thing it should tell them is how to get in touch with you. As many methods as you have, phone, fax, email, pager, anything you want to offer them.
3. It should tell them what you want to do. If you don't know, they don't know, and will not keep the resume.
4. It should tell them why they should hire you to do it. Start with your strong points, if that's education, start there, if it's experience, start there. Include anything relevant, and explain why it matters. Do not include what is not. If you were a member of 4-H and can explain why that makes you suitable to be whatever it is you want to be, great, but if you can't, they won't guess and it'll look like BS.
Choose how you dress carefully. You want to be neat and tidy, a suit is recommended, but if wearing a suit is going to make you stiff and uncomfortable, a button down shirt with a tie and nice slacks should be fine.
Get a business card from everyone you talk to, especially if you give them a resume and they interest you. You'll want to send them a note within a day or two to tell them how much you enjoyed meeting them and look forward to hearing from them. Take notes on the cards after you move on to the next person; if you get into a conversation about their dog, you'll want to remember the dog's name when you send that note. |
