What does a receptionist in a law firm do vs. a legal secretary?

Does it vary by size of firm? I just started work as a "receptionist", but at my job I distribute mail, and do filing (correspondence, pleadings, etc). The Legal Secretary are assistants to the lawyers at this firm.

Im a receptionist in a small law firm (10 people).
A receptionist is supposed to answer calls, do filing, photocopying. etc
A Secretary is more of a personal assistant.

A legal secretary would suggest a certain amount of a basic knowledge about the specialty his/her employer engages.
They can't dispense legal advice, and simply by knowing a bit of legal jargon, can speak intelligently with clients to the extent that they help the attorney on the administrative side, filing, copying, printing out forms, and maybe even filling them out for the attorney to peruse...etc.
Basically, any secretary must have a general knowledge of the workings of the office he/she works in, whether a lawyer, or any other field. The more you keep your boss doing what he/she does best, hence despensing legal representation and advice, the more valuable you are to that attorney. |
