What does being on probation actually mean? In regards to starting a part-time job.?

I got my first part time job about 5 weeks ago, and it says on my forms and stuff that I will be on probation for the first 6 months of employment. It hasn't really had any effect on me so far, so what does it actually mean?

it is a time period to evaluate your job performance and for you to evaluate the employer...................................
in reality any part-time job that is "at-will" it means nothing.
probation used to be used prior to the wide spread concept of at-will employment and many employers still use the terminology although it is not needed because unless you have a contract any employer can let any employee go for any reason or no reason.
under probation if you are terminated without cause you can not qualify for unemployment but as a part-time employee you would probably not qualify for unemployment anyway.
if you are terminated for cause it does not matter if you are full-time, part-time on probation or not you would not qualify for unemployment.
unemployment compensation and the cost involved was the driving factor in the advent of probationary periods. just do the job as instructed, demonstrate work-ethic, punctuality, team work and dedication to the employers mission statement and you will be fine and probation will mean absolutely nothing to you. which, as you have stated has been the case so far, continue to do what you have been and good luck in the future. |

6 months of probation seems kinda long. Usually it means that they have that amount of time to let you go without any obligation for benefits or anything else. It you make it through your probation period then they consider you a permanent employee and you are then eligable for benefits. |

That just means that they have the right to let you go at any time for any reason within that period of time. You may or may not get benefits and/or insurance. Most part time jobs don't have those anyway. Just mind your p's & q's and be a good girl for half a year and you'll be fine. |

It means that they can fire you without any specific reason. |

Mostly, it means they can fire you for things they wouldn't normally fire someone for. |

It means that they are giving you 6 months to learn the job and to prove yourself a good employee. This means not being out a lot, being on time, getting along with other employees and the employer, doing what you are told and showing initiative when you are done your work to help in other areas and not just sit around. During this time they can fire you on the spot with no warning or explanation. After the probation time they can still let you go but will usually give you a reason. Usually they will give warnings to improve first orally or in writing. |

it means if you don't do a good job and they feel it's not working out they can fire you at any time.
it also means that you can quit if YOU feel it's not working out without it having a negative effect on you. |

Probation means that the employee or employer can terminate the employment without any cautions. During this time you cannot take any benefits such as sick leave or annual leave, if you do you wont be paid. |

I think when it comes to jobs it means that you will HAVE to show up for work for the next six months. I mean it is your first job so that makes sense. You wont be able to take days off or use vacation time until that six month stretch is over.
But i may be wrong, it just makes sense to me. I think thats it. |
