What graduate field is best, law school or a MSW? What avenue will offer more opportunities for me? ?

Law is definitely a field with more options.
An MSW avails you to the field of social work, much of which is government funded. With a clinical license, you would get into private practice, but still, unless you go all out, the financial rewards would not compare to a career in law.
Of course in law, you can end up working for the public defender or for a multi-national corporation, which would make huge difference in terms of benefits and salary. You could also hang out your own shingle.
An individual with a law degree would, no matter how you slice it, bill more per hour any day than would a MSW. |

Law is a broader field and offers many career opportunities. A MSW is very valuable, but you should be very interested in the field. I used my legal training to work in finanacial services (again one of many options).

Both are rotten choices. There's a glut of lawyers. Many can't find jobs or jobs that pay enough to live on and pay their student loans. Law can be very hard to get out of. The degree intimidates people which is not good if you're looking for a job. Your student loan debt is crushing.
MSWs get burned out. Working for social service organizations pays little. While you can get into counseling, it can be difficult to make a good living. |
