What happens after law school?

How "easy" is it to get a job with a firm when you finish law school?
Is it a better idea to start your own firm aka work for yourself, or to find an established firm and get hired by them?

Depends on (1) which law school you went to; and (2) how good your grades were. If you went to Harvard or Yale or one of the top of the top schools, it's very easy to get a job at any of the largest firms in the country. If you went to a non-ABA-accredited law school that no one has heard of, you definitely won't get an interview at a large firm, and you will probably struggle getting an interview at a lot of the small places.
If you went to a middle-tier, regional law school like I did, it's a combo of grades, luck, and resume-building. I had top 25% grades, was on the Law Review, and had clerked with three firms before I graduated law school. I had no offers from big firms, but I was well positioned to take a nice job at an 18-attorney firm that paid slightly under what the large firms were paying at the time, with considerably better hours. (After getting more experience, I moved on to a larger firm).
Me, personally - I would start with a firm. Let someone else pay to train you (not to mention, pay for your malpractice insurance, CLE, and health insurance). |

Depends on your grades. There are a lot of attorneys you know. Some firms use new attorneys like slaves. What they do is work them for 70 hour weeks until they can't stand it anymore and quit, then the firm get some new meat. However, the new attorney also uses the firm that seems to be exploiting them because they have an opportunity to learn the art of practicing law quickly and that is something they don't teach you in law school. Top students get the jobs with the best firms of course. It is really tough to hang your own shingle right out of Law School because you don't have any clients and you won't know what you are doing half the time. |

It is better to start with an established firm. Very few people would go to a lawyer straight out of law school with no first hand experience. |
