you end up leaving home and moving in with a strange girl and having a puppy that destroys carpets, before eventually having a gorgeous baby and then discover there is another one on the way...all in the space of two years!!

You burn a bridge. Simply put. And why do you *have to* give 4 weeks notice? Is that what Berta from accounting told you? It's always wise to give notice, 4 weeks is a bit extreme, 2 weeks seems to be customary and in my state- you aren't required to give notice any more than the employer is required to give you notice when firing you. It's simply a courtesy. In any event, if you truly have to give 4 weeks notice, I don't think it will be much of problem, in fact your new employer might find it diligent of you, so long as you tell them, you'd hate to leave your job high and dry and 4 weeks is how long it will take to train a new employee, but if it's a problem you'll gladly cut it short (after all- new employer is your priority). |

They won't have to pay for days you don't work ... plus they will likely give a bad reference, or simply state that you failed to follow through on your notice time. That might scare other employers.
It's just 4 weeks. Tough it out. That's such a little bit of time in the big scheme of things. |

Depending on the country you are in and what kind of contract (if any) you signed.
Assuming you are in the US, and have not signed any contract stating that you are required to give a specific notice, you are generally considered an "employee at will". Simply stated, giving notice is the correct and professional thing to do, but it's not generally "the law". Check with your state government website where it applies to your job.
If you don't work your notice, it can be conceived by the employer that you abandoned your position as opposed to quitting. Not a great thing to do if you are looking for a reference. Regarding pay, again, check the laws that apply but you are generally to be paid for the work you do. If you are in sales or any other competitive business, especially, then get ready to be escorted out of the building post haste!
If you are looking for a reference, you need to negotiate what you need to do to make this work. Tell them that if they don't see the need to have you there for 4 weeks, then you are happy to leave early.
Also, you may want to tell your new prospective employer that you are doing the professional thing by giving notice. They will appreciate that you are taking the high road. They would want the same. |

If you agreed to a 4-week notice and you fail to do that, then a referral can honestly state that you failed to honor you agreement for giving notice.
And that's not good. |
