Why would you want to change an "at will" policy? The doctrine goes both ways. You don't have to stay with a bad employer and employers don't need to keep bad employees. People who find themselves to be "victims" of the "at will" doctrine are often employees who will do only the bare minimum to get by. Companies need to have a right to turn over their work force so they get proactive and productive employees who are willing to do the work required of them without slacking off and without complaint. It also helps drive the wage market where decent employees can demand better wages for merit.
This is what makes unions such drags on the US employment market. The collective bargaining of unions pretty much force employers to keep the garbage and jump through costly hoops to get rid of bad employees. They also force higher wages to be paid to everyone whether they are productive or not. It's part of what's killing the US auto industry right now. They make minimal quality vehicles for ridiculously high wages. Less costs more. On the other side, really decent and useful employees can't get ahead because everyone is treated the same even though no one works the same. There are hardly any any merit increases for good employees because of the union.
So if you're asking this question because you keep trying to do as little as possible and losing your job, your solution is to get into a field that has a union. Otherwise, the free market is a much better option for a hard working employee. Or get into a contract situation where as soon as you sign on the dotted line they start treating you like crap and you can't leave for a year without getting sued. |

most states are at will states
that idea cuts both ways tough. Unless you have a contract, you also can quit your job at any time for no reason,
I would take an act of the state legislature to change "at will." |
