What is it like to be a lawyer?
Find answers to your legal question.

What is it like to be a lawyer?

I am on the border of choosing between pursuing a JD or PhD in Political Science. I am not sure which route to take. Any lawyers here who can give me some insight on what it is like to be a lawyer day after day?

It is one of the worst jobs there are.

Contrary to what the TV shows portray, being a lawyer is not glamorous, 99% of the lawyers are not paid 6-figure salaries, and lawyer work is much, much more than 40 hours a week. It is not a profession to go into UNLESS you really, really feel a calling to law and are willing to work hard every day.

With this economy there are many layoffs in the legal industry. Lawyer news groups such as www.findlaw.com and www.law.com are filled with info about massive associate layoffs. There is very little security in this profession because law schools, who are only in the business to sell education, continue to churn out lawyers twice a year even when there are no jobs.

Those of us who own small/solo law firms are spending time chasing after clients who refuse to pay because "you lawyers make too much money". As lawyers we are the butt of nasty jokes by friends and family. Of course those same people who pass on offensive attorney jokes want legal work for FREE.

You may want to look at a profession that will maximize your earning potential, perhaps an MBA along with a JD. That way at least you can get a job. Good luck

Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is NOT a good field to invest in! Many reasons. Main reason?.......We simply have WAY TOO MANY Lawyers - we have a GLUT of Attorneys.

So.....even IF you finish law school, you probably won't be able to find a job when you are done.

The law schools know this - they know the economy/market is SATURATED - but they won't tell you this because a law student is easy money for them - the law schools have to make very little investment in a law student. The law schools continue to churn out graduates even though they know the market is saturated.

Suggestion: Consider and look into the field of Healthcare <<< THIS is where the jobs are! and scholarships! The field of HEALTHCARE is hot!

Good luck.
