What is it like to be a police officer?

What is it like to be a police officer?

Every job has its good and bad parts, I'd like hear a job description from someone who has actually had this job. I know what the politically correct version of the job description is, but I'd like to know what the frank answer is.

Some pros are good pay and benefits depending on the department, a sense of esprit de corps, great satisfaction from knowing that you help people, a high level of responsibility, etc. Some of the cons could be the shift work often involved, witnessing the worst that humanity has to offer at times, the danger involved, etc. What is considered the "good and that bad" can be quite subjective. Some aspects of the job such as pay, your beat, your supervisors, etc. obviously are dictated by where you work. Being a police officer can be very difficult considering everything that an officer has to be concerned with. However, many police officers would tell you that there is nothing that they would rather do than be a law enforcement officer. Being a police officer is very honorable. There are many things to consider when thinking about becoming a police officer. Check out http://www.peaceofficerjobs.com for excellent information.

my friend use to complain about the long shifts (12hrs) rotating
people spiting at you, swinging at you, lie like they are little kids
I guess he liked his job for high speed chases and he always enjoyed arresting someone he went to school with (they were the ones that thought their stuff didn't stink)
he was K-9 unit and he was a dog lover

I have a friend who was a policeman and is now an ICE agent. He says most law enforcement is pretty boring, and most officers never fire their gun on the job. Obviously, there is danger involved but the stuff you see on TV is a once-a-year or once-a-lifetime event, not a daily event.

It also varies a lot by location, with suburban and small town jobs being much less eventful than big cities.
