What is life like being a paralegal.?

How much do you get paid, how much do you enjoy the work you, what are you hours like, what is a normal work day for you if there is one

In short, bloody hard work. Loved it - hours were dreadful and pay not much better!

depends on which specialty you are in. It's a good pay too depending on the specialty. You'd be salaried and on-call. The work day is busy, sometimes hectic.

It's a job one step above an Administrative Assistant, and a step or two lower than an attorney. So you get work that combines the two. It's a more hectic job if you deal with an attorney who has jury trials.

I have always been fascinated with the law, so I obtained my paralegal certificate in NV and went to work after receiving an extremely generous offer from a local firm. After three months I hated it so bad that I told my husband I was quitting (no discussion) and that I would get a job at Port o' Subs if we needed the money that bad.

My mistake was being so impressed by the money that they offered me that I assumed I would love the job - WRONG. This made me not ask the right questions.

In retrospect, here's what I would look into: How big is the office, what is the culture of the office, exactly what type of work will you be doing (this can be hard, since part of the fun of this job is that your duties can vary considerably).

I ended up in a small, gossipy office with more social stratification than the worst caste system. Secretaries didn't socialize with paralegals who didn't socialize with attorneys. I actually saw an office assistant cry because one of the attorneys screamed at her for buying the wrong donuts.

Okay, that's enought complaining! The bottom line is (just like with any job) make sure you know what you're getting in to. I believe if I would have started with a different firm I would have loved the position and possibly still have been there today. Good luck!
