What is real difference between a Paralegal and a legal assistant?

Hi it would depend on where you are geographically.
Check with the Law Society in your area to see for their definition. In certain parts of Canada, paralegal does more advanced work, research and in some cases work that a lawyer would do such as preparation paperwork & Drafting documents for many different styles of law.
Whereas a legal assistant is limited to working on general correspondence, bring foward systems, photocopying, faxing, filing, mailouts, and general filling in of forms, plus a few more advanced things. The advanced things as a legal assistant are usually more junior things for the paralegal. Paralegals are also called "Law Clerks" in certain areas too.
But then Law clerks are in many places simply what the articling year for law students are referred to when they get their articling positions within courts.
So check with the local law society. |
