By best I mean pay, good hours, fun or exciting work, good benefits like holidays, and retirement benefits.

I am older, not necessarily smarter. I became a lawyer not because I wanted it, but because my friends and family wanted/expected it for me. I regret that decision every day. No b/s!
Like the other responders, I agree you must do what of "best" for you. If I could have a "do over", I would pay the money and go to a legitimate career evaluator/counselor and find out what I enjoyed doing and then what careers are applicable. Some community colleges offer this service, and there are some excellent private agencies that do this.
If you are young and like I was, you will blow off this advice, and grow to regret that you did not pursue this option. |

The only one who can answer that is you! "Best" means different things to different people. My dream career could be your nightmare! Your idea of "good hours" could be horrible to someone else.
Don't count on retirement benefits from any company. Create your own retirement account.
If lots of time off is what you want, be a teacher. All summer and lots of other breaks.
Really, you just need to decide what it is YOU enjoy doing and can see yourself doing long-term. Going into something just for the hours, pay or benefits isn't going to make you happy in the long run. |

Nursing! I have my BSN. I'm a critical care nurse and work 2- 12hour shifts weekly and bring in about $1000 gross pay a week. I work every third weekend, every other holiday, but the differential is decent. I can pick and choose my hours- days, nights, evenings. I work closely with physicians and mid-level practitioners to deliver intensive, high-tech care to my sick patients. It takes lots of knowledge, hands-on skill, fast-thinking and compassion to do this job. I am respected, and I feel I contribute positively to society. It's a tough career, but I am so glad I am in it. Hope you (and others) consider it. |
