What are things to look for?
Is a website like "lawyers.com" a good start, or is there something more official?

Contacting your state Bar Association is a good place to start. They have a website...just search for '(your state) bar association'. You will be able to find out about the education, experience, etc of the lawyer you are trying to contact, as well as specialty practice areas....like the medical malpractice.
