What is the best way to tell my employer that I'll be leaving for law school this summer?!?!?

What is the best way to tell my employer that I'll be leaving for law school this summer?!?!?
|
Ok, I've been working as a file clerk at a law firm for 2 months now (you may have read my previous question). When they hired me, I didn't tell them about my intentions to go to law school, because I knew they wouldn't hire me (that happened at another firm). So, I fibbed and said I'm thinking about becoming a paralegal, when I had already applied to law school.
I've already gotten a few acceptance letters, so I'll be leaving work around mid-July, so I can prepare for law school.
I wanna leave on good terms, so I'll give them plenty of notice in advance. I'm gonna tell them that I was thinking of law school and had applied, but I didn't really know what would happen, which is actually true (long story). They like me, so hopefully they won't get mad and be happy for me. I mean, I'm just a file clerk and they have 4 others. They can live without me!
Any suggestions on what I should? How I should say it? When I should say it?
Thanks! :o)

You should tell them at least 2 weeks before you plan on quitting. Are you afraid they will fire you? They will appreciate advanced notice. Hopefully they will understand. I mean, you are going to law school. They should be happy for you. My old boss was when I told him I was going to law school. Heck, they even got me a good luck in law school cake. It should be fine. |

Please leave them plent of notice, so they can hire and train
your replacement. I am sure that many congratulations, will be
on the way. They may even help finance you, and hire you,
when you are all done. Afterall, I am sure many of them were
sitting where you are right now, when they started. <}:-}) |

To your boss "Listen, I have something important to talk to you about. I have received an acceptance letter from XXXX Law School and am seriously leaning towards going. If I go, it means I'll have to leave this job in mid-July...." Your employer at this point will probably jump in with "congratulations! let me know what your decision is as soon as you can so we can find a replacement."
That gives plenty of notice. I do not imagine that a file clerk would be too hard to find. And if they like you they'll be happy for you. |

Come on! If you are going to be a lawyer then you're going to have to be more assertive than you are now. So tell them your leaving for law school fullstop! |

You are a nice person. Regardless if they understand or not. You have to do what is best for you. It is good that you don't want to burn any bridges. Just remind them that you did talk to them about you applied to law school, and that now the opportunity has come and as sad as you for leaving them, you study is more important at this point. |

Just be honest, but you don't need to share all the dirty details. Simply tell them that you will be taking the next step toward a bright future and thank them for the opportunity to grow in your chosen field. I think they will appreciate you handling it maturely with no drama. Letting them know that you will be glad to train your replacement so the transition is seemless. That training/honeymoon period is what employers dread. |

sit down for a few minutes with your employer and tell them that I have found what I was looking for and I am putting in my two weeks notice. Well be straight forward and get straight to the point be fair and honest with yourself. Dont miss that opportunity cause they dont come very often. Thank her or him for helping you with getting into the job and just dont worry about it. Do whats right for your self and your if you have a family think about whats best for them as well. I went to college and took Criminal justice and theres not many jobs around in my area for my type of college degree right now. So go for it and enjoy it and see what you can do with yourself. |

Wait until you make some friends.
1. write a letter of resignation and give them one (maybe two months) notice. Print it on bond paper. Sign in blue ink. Keep a copy for your records.
2. Before you turn in your notice, ask to speak with HR, the Office manager or the managing partner, whom ever is your direct supervisor.
3. Explain to them you will be attending law school and need to tender resignation. That you gain invaluable experience from them and you hope to continue a good relationship. Tell them you are tendering one months notice (or two if you feel they will not fire you right away) and you are willing to help train your replacement.
4. Hand the letter to the appropriate person. |
