What is the decent/ethical/legal/best supervisory decision to make?
|
Essentially, Sally interviews and offers a job to Mary when Sally's friend says "you have to meet Gene, he would be perfect for the job." After reviewing Gene's credentials, he IS perfect for the job and would be the better hire, but Sally already told Mary she had the job. So what is the decent/ethical/legal/best supervisory decision to make?

The supervisor should consult with the person above them. However, the job should really go to the person who it was offered to. That person may have given their 2 weeks notice at their other job, and are making plans to begin this one. I don't think it would be ethical to recind the offer. But if I were a supervisor in that situation, I'd consult with MY boss before I did anything. |

In a way offering the job to Mary is somewhat contractual, unless something has arisen in her credentials since the appointment that may be considered undesirable. I believe that Sally has a moral obligation to stand by her word in hiring Mary. Sally may have put some stipulation on the employment contract such as a period of trial. I would think that Mary had to give notice at her previous employment to accept the new position, therefor it would make it difficult for her.
I don't believe that Gene's credentials should have even been considered again after the position was filled.
It would be somewhat sad that Sally may continually thinking she should have hired Gene and not be prepared to support Mary.
I think the wrong decision was definitely to re-examine Gene's credentials. |
