What is the minimum wage for minors in NJ?
Find answers to your legal question.

What is the minimum wage for minors in NJ?

My 15 year old neice is working in East Orange NJ and she's making $5.85 an hour but my other neice is making $7.15 an hour. Is my other neice getting ripped off? I know minimum wave is $7.15 for adults but are minors less?

in general there is not a lower wage for minors in New Jersey,
the minimum wage in New Jersey is $7.15 hour but not all employers are covered by all labor laws. the laws vary for some employers based on gross earnings and number of employees. there are also exceptions made for up to 90 days for minors in some occupations for training in which case the minimum wage is $4.25.
there are also the considerations of tipped employees who must make at least minimum wage for every hour worked but the employer can take a wage credit from tips to drop the employers part down to as little as $2.13 an hour. tipped employees must still make at least $7.15 hour when tips and hourly wage are added together.

on the face of it, this sounds wrong and as if one of these employers is not paying the legal wage but..........................
i don't know all the facts concerning these employers so i can't say if this is legal or not. i am saying there is the possibility it is legal but most likely it is NOT.

your question should be directed to the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development. you can provide them all the details that are relevant to determine if this is legal.

its either 7.50 or 7.25 an hour.

i cant seem to remember. i know that 5.85 is WAYY les than minimum.

$7.25.... but is the other one at $5.85 paying taxes? Is she working under the table or in food service? Food service like waitress and even that car busing thing they do today- don't pay full minimum wages because they are suppose to get tips.
