not easy to answer. it's dependent on many things.
1. where you work - geographically
2. type of firm
3. size of firm

If you work for a big firm - you work a ton and family time is probably pretty minimal for the first few yrs as an associate, but you get paid a lot - in Omaha, NE - you start at 80k to 100k

smaller firm - you work a little less, but consequently make less 60k - 70k

Finding employment is not easy - even if you're ranked high it can be very difficult. It really depends on what you want to do though. Trying to get into the premium firms is extremely competitive and difficult...

I think if you read Stephen T's response you will either get very discouraged or you will fall asleep from his lengthy discourse!
If his wife if making $50,000 a year as a manicurist, then why does he live at home with Mom and Dad. Anyway to answer your question, I have never practiced law, but I do believe what my parents told me. "You have to go where the money is". And if this means relocating - then that is what you will have to do. Talk to some local lawyers about their life-styles for accuracy's sake. I would think that any large city would have positions for an attorney! Good luck to you!

As everyone else has said, it really depends a lot on where you are, what type of law you practice, if you're a solo practitioner or working for a firm, etc.

If you're an attorney whose practice solely involves drafting wills or other estate planning documents, you're probably not going to be spending much time in court or spending too much time after hours in the office. The nature of the work does not require that. However, if you do something like medical malpractice or high profile criminal law, you'll be very busy, likely have a larger staff, and spend a lot more overtime. Plus you'll have trials, which have a great deal of preparation involved in them.

Being a lawyer is not all about going to court. Most of it is spent drafting court documents, keeping up with current case law, researching, and talking on the phone. What you see on TV and in movies is not really representative. It can be, however, a very stressful job.

Starting salary and ease of finding a job depends on where you are located.
