What is union its purpose and the benifits it provides

Unions were a much needed and valuable allie to the working person when they started in the US. they fought for the right to work and to be treated fairly. they spend most of their time now fighting against the right to work. they offer no protections or benefits that are not offered to non union members or non union shops and their unrealistic demands on employers have been a contributing factor to the demise of our auto industry (just one example). unions are to be thanked for the laws on child labor, overtime and minimum wage as it was their efforts that made government address those issues. their usefulness today is deminished by their poor management and unrealistic policies and structure. the employee is of little importance and now it is the union that is working to protect it's own position.

The principles behind unionization involve democratization and participation in the workplace. The basic idea is that employment is such a critical aspect of an employee's life that the employee should have some say in how it's run. Rather than be completely at the mercy of the employer in all ways, the union gives the employees bargaining power, and allows them to influence the way in which their workplace is governed.

On the flip side, unions can be very difficult to work with. When you sign on with a union, you basically lose the right to individually negotiate with your employer, and you lose a number of other statutory avenues of recourse as well. (Typically, unionized workplaces are governed by a slightly different set of laws than non-union.) And if you run into a difficult situation and your union doesn't want to help you (which sometimes happens; they have their priorities, and a particular employee's problems isn't always going to be at the top of the list), then you may have a very difficult time enforcing your rights under the collective agreement. Also, even beneficial exercise of managerial discretion is curbed by unions. (They can't fire you without a good reason anymore, but neither can they promote you out of seniority order either. I've also seen unions involved in protracted first-contract negotiations insist that the employers *not* give their typical inflation-based raises until a collective agreement is signed.) Further, some unions are dogged, and will engage in hard bargaining and excessive litigation to the point that an employer's ability to stay in business may be compromised.

the purpose is to keep the interest of the employee at the top of the list and to show the company that they can full fill the obligation of a day of quality and journymans work for a fair days pay.The union was formed to not only take care of the employees but their families also.there for providing benifits. dental,& medical so that the employee would not have to worry about the well being of their families while at work. The union also was formed to start employee off 1/3 more than minimum wage so to compensate the union dues and to show ownership as a union member.One who is paid what they are worth are better employees. now the Union stand beside the employee who might be fired under prjeduce or wrongfully. They also garentee a contract. so that in case the company should decide to close door without proper notice you will be compensated untill the end term of such contract. they also help support pay raises in a timely fashion.
but it really depends on how much you particapate and how you ask questions during meetings trully the union is up to the inneractions of it members.
