Say I steal, imbezzal, obtain money in some illegal way. I die without ever being caught, and I will the money to my next of kin, family, etc. The authorities eventually figure out what I had done. Can they seize the money from my next of kin? The family had nothing to do with the crime.

Yes they can take the money, or if there is no money, they can seize assets of the inheritors.
This happens a lot in fine art cases. Sometimes a painting that was stolen decades ago, shows up. It may have been bought and sold legally many times, however, it remains the property of the original owner, who can have it seized with no repayment to the person that bought it legally. |

The rights to stolen items does not change hands and there is no statute of limitations on suits for recovery because of fraud. Your family may be pure, but this does not give them to benefit from your evil. |

Most states have a statute of limitations on crimes like embezzlement, etc. so it would kind of depend on how many years have passed since you illegally obtained the funds. However, if you killed someone to get the money then the money would probably be confiscated from your estate. I'm not a lawyer, but I also hope you're not a thief! |
